Pedestrian Deaths Are Near All-Time Highs - Miami Personal Injury Attorney

Miami Personal Injury Lawyer News: Pedestrians are undoubtedly the most vulnerable people using the sidewalks and roads. The human body is simply no match for a motorized vehicle, and pedestrians can suffer extremely serious injuries when they are involved in accidents. In fact, pedestrian deaths are in the middle of a significant spike. From 2007 through 2016, pedestrian deaths nationwide rose 27 percent. This increase came when traffic fatalities for occupants of vehicles were down 14 percent over the same time period. Given that juxtaposition, it should be no surprise that pedestrian fatalities posted a sharp increase during that period as a share of all traffic fatalities. Pedestrian deaths share of all traffic fatalities increased from 11 percent in 2007 to 16 percent in 2016, a nearly 50 percent increase, giving pedestrian deaths the largest share of all traffic fatalities that such fatalities have been at in over 30 years.

Injuries for Pedestrians Are Skyrocketing, As Well

Pedestrian deaths constitute a major traffic safety issue. In 2015, nearly 5,400 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S. The situation is not getting better, either. A governors’ traffic safety group says that pedestrian traffic fatalities hit nearly 6,000 in 2017. Pedestrians are approximately 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a traffic accident than are the occupants of passenger vehicles.  Just as significant, though, are the almost 130,000 pedestrians injured in traffic accidents in 2015. That number is nearly double the number of pedestrians injured in traffic accidents in 2013.

Further, even non-fatal pedestrian accidents carry a higher risk of serious injury. Because they are completely unprotected from the violence of an automobile accident, pedestrians are far more likely than car passengers to suffer severe injuries.  Academic studies have found that head injuries are among the most common severe injuries to pedestrians who are hurt in traffic accidents. These injuries tend to be severe, debilitating, and persistent and can result in the need for expensive, even life-long, care.

When pedestrians and cars meet, pedestrians lose. This puts pedestrians involved in automobile accidents at an elevated risk for severe injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs. Simply put, pedestrians in these accidents are completely unprotected from dramatically stronger forces than the human body was designed to withstand.  Government statistics indicate that severe head injuries are among the leading injuries for pedestrian victims of traffic accidents.  Other common injuries to pedestrians are lower extremity injuries because in adult accidents the car strikes the legs first. However, upper body injuries and head injuries are common in such accidents, as well, as an adult will then hit the hood or windshield of the striking vehicle and often is thrown over the vehicle to land on the road behind. The higher the vehicle speed, the more violent the effects on the pedestrian from the events that follow the initial impact with the car’s bumper. These injuries can lead to loss of function, high medical costs, and loss of work time, if not the loss of the ability to work completely.
